Cashpuck 2013 - Signups & Call for Captains
« on: December 22, 2012, 02:25:03 PM »

UPDATE: Sent pretty much this to captains

I'd like to start the cashpuck auction tomorrow at 8pm.
It will be an auction rather than a draft; you don't need to be online at any specific time.
Here's how it works:
- All players are available for bidding (CI link to be provided later) when the draft begins.
- Captains can bid on players in $1m increments by clicking a link on the site.
- The current bid is shown, but the bidder is not.
- When a bid stands for 24 hours, it is finalized.
- Teams will be a minimum of 11 players, and there will be a salary cap. (I'm thinking $48m; 4m avg for a 12 man roster)
- You must leave at least $1m available for bidding for each player left for that 11 player minimum, and cannot bid on a 13th player (although I might allow getting a 13th from FA).
- Late joins / free agency will also be conducted by bidding, so it's advisable to save some room.  Cap will increase only slightly if the rosters need to increase.
- If bidding might go on beyond a week we will accelerate the practice to wrap it up.
- You (and only you) will be able to see your own bids and salary remaining.
- When you win a player, I'd like you to get in touch with them immediately to figure out availabilities.  I'd like to schedule games to start immediately after bidding.

Last time I ran it we made your salary based off of your league stats or defaulted you to somewhere near the bottom if you had none (I think we may have adjusted somebody like UKM up manually who had no stats but I don't remember if this was the case).

I just read that we are doing bidding this time which means you will definitely be drafted sooner than later because I guarantee some dumb captains r gona make some dumb bids and start ramping up to the cap after they have 5-6 players.

The way Cashpuck works you will eventually be drafted by either need or strategy (late entrants make staying under the cap beneficial as we saw last time around).

bidding is a nice idea, how are you going to order the "lots" of us players to be bid on?

random or, seeded order?

alphabetical? does it matter?

obviously it matters

presumably people are blind bidding which means if you want Player X (say Jagr) who is the 78th person in the draft order you have to underbid on essentially every player beforehand to ensure you have enough cap room to make a sizable enough bid on that player when he comes up. You only need to "accidentally" win 2 or 3 players because you didn't expect everybody else to bid so low to throw off your cap enough to be completely out of the running for a player like that. Depending on how the seeding works out, if a sizable number of good players are much later in the draft everyone beforehand could be undervalued. Depending on how the trade system / late entries work this could be important as we saw low salaries become essentially bargaining chips to make trades work almost right after the draft.

The more artificially fluctuated your salary is (high or low) the more or less likely respectively it is that you will remain on the team you were actually drafted on, which is good or bad depending on whether you like or don't like your particular team situation. A higher salary is exponentially harder to get off your team as people don't want to give up their high bids for an unhappy afk'er or something, and as an artifically low salary (especially if your active) you become an easy trade chip for whoever that captain is trying to get on their team at the time.

There will also be the case I'm sure where every captain will bid the minimum (assuming there is a minimum bid...) on a player because nobody wants them and nobody wants to waste the cap on them. How do you determine then who gets that player is another good question.

boogie smart for once.

I would just randomly draw the players out of a bag from who are signed up and start the bidding on them in whatever that order is...

players who get no bids, go into round 2's random draw.

Fur except goldeye never said it would be a silent auction, I'm guessing bidding will take place like we normally do for drafts and you'll just have to plan out your strategy to save up for zeppelin as last pick of the draft. Or maybe everyone is saving up for zepp so you pick up other dudes instead.

The auction draft FF league I did a couple years ago had each person take turns putting a player up for auction.  Added some interesting strategy but made for a very grim final wave of picks.

The draft will go off fine regardless, isn't it free agency that is a nightmare here?

The nightmare here is when someone bids $7,000,000 on MOP winner thus crippling their team only to go to that persons house to tell them they can't play and end up getting shot :(

Signing up

THE LETTER H ROLE CALL

can the captains be less dumb this time around? Last time I played cashpuck the captains drafted horribly and allowed zeppelin 2 draft the most ridiculous team ever and even allowed him 2 pick me up in the 5th round. I don't think I've ever seen a team dominate a tournament so hard.
