My router died last Thursday. I used a backup router to play hz that night. Was having some crazy lag that I assumed was because of the 7 year old router I had laying around. I thought it was kind of strange because my internet was stable or at least seemed to be.  I purchased a new router and continued to have lag. I use wireless and consistently have 4-5 bars. Speedtest results are right where they should be according to my plan so i am confused. I will be getting a long ethernet cable to test if that make's a difference. Wanted to hear what the trace gods have to said about these traces. All taken on different days.

edit: tonight's lag
lag: ping: s2c: 71 (30-380)  c2s: 35 (10-47)    loss: s2c: 0.45 (20.06)  c2s: 0.07 (1.09)    etc: flux: 0,0 (0,0)
PING Current:580 ms  Average:97 ms  Low:30 ms  High:1110 ms
10 mins later
lag: ping: s2c: 52 (40-70)  c2s: 23 (10-37)    loss: s2c: 0.70 (3.35)  c2s: 0.00 (0.00)    etc: flux: 0,0 (0,0)
PING Current:50 ms  Average:52 ms  Low:30 ms  High:200 ms

Notice how the bad numbers start at hop 1?  It's probably your wireless.  Try different channels maybe.

However, for these large sample sizes I'm a bit surprised at how the loss %s get worse, but there might be a good explanation for that.

That is some ridiculous ping from your pc to the first access point or router that it connects to. There is something funky going on between your pc and the router.

Assuming you are using wifi...
  • Are you password protected? (someone might be piggybacking onto your wifi)
  • How many people/devices are connected to this router? (someone else, or one of your devices might be hogging the bandwidth)
  • Is internet fast with other devices that aren't your pc? (would help you determine if router is actually fast and your pc wifi card is at fault)
  • Is internet slower, or do you get lag usually at certain hours of the day?(perhaps during peak hours, other wifi networks around you colliding with your wifi if they are using the same channel)(you could change wifi channel to a less predominant one in your living area)
  • Do you live in a densely populated building? house vs apartments? (same as above)
  • How many barriers are within your router and your pc? (the more walls between you, the weaker the signal, the more it has to repeat communication) (this is especially true for 5ghz band set, which doesn't travel thru walls as well as 2.4 ghz.)
  • ~~If you were to plug ethernet to pc, do you have similar traceroute results?(i would assume not, but who knows. If that 180+ ping dissapears, that would mean the traffic route from your router to server is completely fine and the problem 100% lies with either router wifi, or pc wifi card)

I tried 3 different channels. The thing is I haven't had lag like this in the past 5 years at this location. I'd be surprised if my old crappy zoom router was giving me better reception then this new Asus one. On my wifi analyzer app there is some interference on all channels. My wealthy lesbian neighbor sends out like 4 wifi signals. When I pinged my router in cmd prompt last night it never went above 64 ms.

Ethernet cable comes today. I will see what happens with the ping.

You got 64ms to your Wi-Fi router... If you got 5ms that would be horrible....  Really that makes no sense.
